Sequoia Sentinels™ is a community-led non-profit [501(c)(3)] dedicated to cultivating the growth of sequoia trees across private lands and forests in Southern California, focusing mainly on the picturesque Palomar Mountain region.
Sequoia Sentinels began in 2006 with the planting of sequoias on Palomar Mountain. For the past several years, we have planted between fifty and one hundred seedlings on private properties on the Mountain. These planting occur in the spring, with occasional plantings in the fall. Seedlings are produced and distributed to private landowners and assistance is provided in locating appropriate places to plant and in the planting itself.
Sequoia Sentinels follows the work of Gus Weber, a former employee of Caltech's Palomar Observatory, who planted sequoias in the 1950's and 60's on Caltech grounds and also distributed some to residents on Palomar.
Today, 400+ sequoias have been identified and located on Palomar Mountain. In total, we have identified 1,000+ sequoias identified and located in the southern California Montaine regions of Palomar, the San Bernadino and San Jacinto Mountains.
