Community Sequoia Tree Planting on Palomar Mountain
Sequoias: Not just in Northern California
Unless you are well-versed in sequoias (specifically Sequoiadendron giganteum, different from Coast Redwoods or Sequoia sempervirens), you might believe that sequoias only grow in northern California. Wikipedia only lists 81 groves worldwide, all in northern California, And the National Park Service states, "Giant sequoias grow only on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in California."
FACT: Sequoias grow in nearly every state in the US, with very large concentrations in Oregon, Washington, Michigan, and many others. We even have five regenerating groves in southern California. My 20-acre parcel on Palomar Mountain matches the rainfall, snowfall, temperature, humidity, and irradiance of Sequoia National Park. In fact, we get 200+ days of coastal fog, which can make our trees even healthier since they get ~40% of the water from the air.
The UK, for example, has well-over 500,000 trees! Mexico City has a large population! You can find them in most countries, as they once covered the entire northern hemisphere. I am in contact with over 100 growers world-wide.
